Tips for a better photo
  • Daylight from a window beats flash. Flash flattens fur and makes eyes glow.
  • Get down to eye level with your pet. A photo taken from above makes the head look small.
  • Fill the frame: the face and shoulders should take up most of the picture.
  • Keep whiskers and ears inside the frame and in focus. Wait for a sharp shot, not a perfect pose.
  • One pet per photo gives the cleanest result. Use a second photo for another pet.

Eyes first

A cat portrait lives or dies on the eyes. Photograph by a window so the pupils are not wide open, and avoid flash, which gives green or red glare. If your cat’s eyes are half closed, that sleepy look can be charming in watercolor, but a wide-eyed frame makes a stronger royal portrait.

Whiskers and fur

Long white whiskers vanish against a pale background and look thin in a sketch. A dark, plain wall behind your cat keeps them visible. Fluffy and long-haired cats turn out soft in the watercolor style, while short sleek coats show well in the pop-art poster.

Getting a cat to look at the camera

Hold a quiet toy or a treat just above the lens, call once and take the photo as the head turns. Kneel so the camera is at the cat’s height. A cat on a windowsill or a cushion at eye level, looking straight at you, is the ideal portrait photo.

Picking a style

A tabby with strong markings suits the Renaissance noble look. A white or grey cat shines in the pencil sketch. For a cat who rules the house, the royal court portrait is hard to beat.

Questions people ask

How do I make a portrait from a cat photo?

Add the photo above, choose a style and, if you like, add a name. The preview appears at once. Download it free with a watermark. The full portrait is not available yet; you can join the waitlist.

What is the best photo of a cat for a portrait?

A sharp daylight photo at your cat’s eye level, with both eyes and the whiskers visible and the face filling most of the frame.

Why do my cat’s eyes look odd in the preview?

Flash can leave glowing eyes, which every filter keeps. Retake the photo in daylight with no flash, or choose a frame where the pupils are not fully open.

Does the cat portrait work for a black cat?

Yes, with light on the face. A black cat photographed against a window is a silhouette. Face the cat towards the window instead.

Is my cat’s photo uploaded?

No. It stays on your device in this version, and the preview is drawn in your browser.
