Tips for a better photo
- Daylight from a window beats flash. Flash flattens fur and makes eyes glow.
- Get down to eye level with your pet. A photo taken from above makes the head look small.
- Fill the frame: the face and shoulders should take up most of the picture.
- Keep whiskers and ears inside the frame and in focus. Wait for a sharp shot, not a perfect pose.
- One pet per photo gives the cleanest result. Use a second photo for another pet.

Five habits that make a better portrait photo
- Light. Stand your pet near a window and shoot in daylight. Flash flattens fur and turns eyes into bright discs.
- Eye level. Crouch or lie on the floor. A photo from above shrinks the head and stretches the body.
- Whiskers and ears. Keep them inside the frame. Cropping a whisker tip off looks like a mistake in a portrait.
- Sharp eyes. If only one thing is in focus, make it the eyes. Take a burst and keep the sharpest.
- A plain background. A wall or a rug is fine. A cluttered room competes with the face.
One pet or several?
Use one pet per photo for the cleanest result. A photo with two animals touching or overlapping is harder to style well, and the free preview treats the picture as a whole. A second pet in one portrait is not available yet (coming soon); it is planned as part of the Up to 3 styles / 2 pets plan. Until then, make one preview for each.
What the preview does with your picture
Your photo is cropped to fit the frame you choose and then run through the style’s filter. A tiled PREVIEW watermark goes across the finished image and the size is held to 800 pixels. Nothing is sent anywhere. Pick another style and the preview redraws from the same photo.
When a photo will not work well
Very dark photos, motion blur, photos where the pet is far away and photos taken through glass tend to look muddy in every style. A pet’s face that fills a third of the picture or more gives the best result. If the photo is a small crop from a larger one, use the original.
Questions people ask
How do I make a pet portrait from a photo?
Add one clear photo above, choose a style and, if you like, type a name. The preview is drawn in your browser. Download it free with a watermark. The full portrait is not available yet; you can join the waitlist.
What is the best photo for a pet portrait?
A sharp photo taken in daylight at your pet’s eye level, with the face and shoulders filling most of the frame and both ears and whiskers visible.
Does a pet portrait photo need to be high resolution?
Not for the free preview, which uses at most 800 pixels. Photos need to be at least 300 pixels on the short side. For the full portrait, a larger original gives more detail to work with, so use the original from your camera.
Can I use a photo of me with my pet?
The styles are designed for the pet. A photo with a person in it may crop awkwardly. Whether people will be allowed in photos at all is still being decided for the full portraits, so crop to the pet for now.
Is the photo kept anywhere?
No. In this version the photo never leaves your device, and closing the tab discards it.
